How to set a reminder to call someone on iPhone (once, every Sunday or for everyone)
How to set a reminder to call someone on iPhone: the Siri sentence to use, a repeat for every Sunday, call-backs and what to do past five people.

The short of it
- The quickest route is Siri, with the timing first, the way Apple’s own example does it: “Remind me tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to call Tara.”
- Give every call reminder a time as well as a date, because a reminder with only a date goes off at 9am by default.
- To call someone every week or month, open the reminder’s details, turn on Date or Time, tap Repeat and choose the frequency.
- As a rule of thumb, repeating reminders suit one or two people, but past about five, a rhythm that counts from your last real conversation is easier to keep up.
To set a reminder to call someone on iPhone, ask Siri something like “Remind me tomorrow at 6pm to call Mum”, or open the Reminders app, tap New Reminder, type “Call Mum” and give it a date and a time. To make it a regular call, open the reminder’s details, tap Repeat and choose how often.
It takes less time than reading this paragraph. What takes longer is the gap between “Call Mum” lighting up your Lock Screen and Mum actually hearing your voice. If there’s a months-old “Call Dave” in your Reminders app, you’ve met the gap.
Below: the Siri sentence to use (with a builder to make your own), how to get reminded to call someone back, how to make a call repeat every Sunday, when your list gets long enough to need one of the best apps to keep in touch with friends and how to handle a text you can’t answer yet. Every step comes from Apple Support’s own pages (mostly the iPhone User Guide for iOS 27), checked on 18 September 2026.
How to set a call reminder on iPhone in the Reminders app
The Reminders app is the most dependable route, because you can see exactly what you’ve set. Apple’s guides to creating reminders and adding reminder details boil down to this:
- Open Reminders and tap New Reminder. Make the call the title: “Call Mum”, or “Call Dave back”.
- Tap the reminder, then the Edit Details button. That’s the small “i” in a circle beside it.
- Turn on Date, then Time. Pick the day, then a time you’ll genuinely be free to talk.
- Tap Done.

Don’t skip the time. If a reminder has a date but no time, Apple says the notification appears at 9am by default, which is how “Call Mum Sunday” ends up breaking into a Sunday sleep-in. You can change that default time in Settings, under Apps, then Reminders, then Today Notification.
For a call you really can’t miss, like ringing the vet before it closes, turn on Urgent in the same screen. Urgent reminders get an alarm that, in Apple’s words, goes off “even when your device is silenced or a Focus is on” (it needs iOS 26.2 or later and iCloud Reminders, and the alarm rings on whichever device Find My uses as your location). Keep it for the vet: a Sunday call to Mum doesn’t need to go off like a smoke alarm.
Is writing it down worth the fuss? A University College London study suggests yes: good intentions leak, even with money on the table. (Admittedly, 25 cents at a time.)
About 4 in 10
All they had to do was visit a web link on three named days over the following week. The sessions ran on a Wednesday, and the bonus days were the Friday, Monday and Wednesday after. Never trust Wednesday’s brain with Friday’s job.
Sam Gilbert’s paper (four online experiments with 1,196 people) also found that when people could set reminders during a short on-screen memory task, “setting external reminders improved performance”. That task ran over seconds, not days, but it points the same way.
In two small online experiments by Chiu and Gilbert (52 people each), people set fewer reminders when setting one took more physical effort. So make it easy: add the Reminders button to Control Centre, or assign Reminders to the Action button if your iPhone has one. The fewer taps it takes, the less time your thumb has to wander off to the weather.
How to ask Siri to remind you to call someone
Siri is the fastest route when your hands are full. Apple’s own example, from its support article on Reminders, is “Remind me tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to call Tara.” We don’t know who Tara is, but we hope she got her call.
Notice the order: when first, then who. Siri copes with the other order too (Apple’s iOS 27 guide also uses “Remind me to pack an umbrella when I get home”), but this builder follows Apple’s call example.
Build your Siri reminder
A reason in the title tells future you why it matters. “Call Dave” on its own ages badly.
Remind me tomorrow at 6pm to call Mum about Saturday
Rather type than talk? Turn on Type to Siri, found in Siri settings under Requests on Apple Intelligence iPhones, or in Siri’s accessibility settings on other models. It’s handy on the bus, where saying “call Nan about the lemon tree” out loud tends to get you gardening advice from the seat behind.
Before you trust Siri with Nan, know that it needs an internet connection and that iOS 27 has two versions of it: Siri Classic and the new Siri AI (in beta on iPhone 15 Pro and later, in English to start and not yet in the EU). Whichever you have, glance at the reminder it made. “Call Nan” and “Call Dan” are one letter apart, and Dan will have questions.
While you’re at it, tell Siri who your people are: Apple’s example is “Hey Siri, Ashley Kamin is my mom”, so you can later say “FaceTime Mom”. The Siri guide with the umbrella also suggests “Call Ashley Rico” and “Send an email to Ashley”, so somebody at Apple knows a lot of Ashleys.
How to set a call-back reminder on iPhone
For a missed call, ask Siri straight away: “Remind me tomorrow at 9am to call Dave back.” Or add “Call Dave back” in Reminders with a date and a time, as above.
If you can’t talk right now, Apple’s guides put a Remind Me button in two places. When a second call arrives while you’re on one, tap Remind Me and choose when; when you decline a FaceTime video call, Remind Me sets a reminder to call back. It’s the phone version of mouthing “call you back” across a crowded room.
Apple’s guide for iOS 18 listed a Remind Me button when you declined a phone call, but the iOS 27 version no longer mentions it (it lists Voicemail and Message), so if you can’t see it, Siri is the quicker route.
How to set a recurring reminder on iPhone (call Mum every Sunday)
To make “Call Mum” come back every Sunday, follow Apple’s steps for a recurring reminder:
- Tap the reminder, then the Edit Details button.
- Turn on Date or Time. Set the first Sunday and a time that suits, say 6pm after dinner.
- Tap Repeat and choose the frequency. Pick weekly for every Sunday or monthly for once a month.
- Tap Done. That’s it until Sunday.
If you can’t find Repeat, check that Date or Time is on: Apple’s steps turn one of them on before Repeat. For every second Sunday, a Custom repeat does the job. Apple documents it in its Reminders guide for Mac (enter the number of weeks between repeats, then choose the day), so look for Custom under Repeat on your iPhone.
One quirk: you can’t get ahead. Apple’s Calendar guide says future repeats “can only be marked complete after the most current instance is marked complete”, so one very long call can’t tick off the next three Sundays.
A one-off reminder gets one call made. A repeating one keeps the calls coming, and a call is worth making: in a 2021 field experiment by Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley, US university students who reconnected with an old friend by phone felt a stronger bond than those who used email, and the calls were no more awkward.
Even so, 67% of the students had said beforehand that they’d rather use email. Eighty of the 200 never answered the researchers’ follow-up at all. For a study about getting in touch, that is a very human result.

Make the reminder specific, too. A meta-analysis of 94 tests by Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran found that if-then plans, in the form “If situation Y is encountered, then I will initiate goal-directed behavior X!”, had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals (all kinds of goals, not calls in particular).
So “After the Sunday roast, call Mum” beats “Call Mum sometime”. The exclamation mark is theirs, but feel free to borrow it.
Not sure weekly is right? Our guide to how often you should call your parents has a rhythm for the whole family. And for birthdays, skip the repeating reminder: Contacts and Calendar do it better, as our guide on how to remember friends’ birthdays explains.
When a list of “Call X” reminders stops working (somewhere around person six)
Our rule of thumb: a repeating reminder is perfect for one or two people. Past about five, a list of “Call X” reminders tends to work against you, because each one runs on the calendar, and a friendship runs on the last time you actually spoke.
Picture Sunday night with fifteen of them. You called Priya on Wednesday, but hers still goes off, and three others have slid into last week, marked up like a returned maths test: overdue all-day reminders can turn red, and the badge can count them.
Leave the app alone long enough and iPhone may even offer a way out: Apple’s notifications guide says that when you haven’t used an app for a while, you may see a suggestion to turn off its notifications. That’s how “Call Dave” is still sitting in Scheduled, dated March 2024, as quietly overdue as a library book nobody mentions any more.
Remembering to call is admin. Calling is the friendship.
The fix isn’t more reminders. It’s swapping dates for rhythms: decide roughly how often you’d like to talk to each person, and let something count from the last time you did.
A spreadsheet with a “last called” column can do it (see our guide to a personal CRM for friends), though a spreadsheet will wait patiently for you to open it, for years if necessary.
How to set a reminder from a text message on iPhone
Apple’s Messages guide doesn’t list a button that turns a text into a reminder, but three built-in tools cover most of the job.
- When Messaging. In a reminder’s details, turn on When Messaging and pick a contact, and the reminder appears “the next time you chat with that person in Messages”. Perfect for “ask Sione how the audition went”, less help for the friend you keep meaning to text, because it only turns up once you’re already chatting.
- Mark as Unread. Swipe right on a conversation to mark it as unread, so it sits in your list looking unfinished until you reply.
- Send Later. Write the text now and schedule it up to 14 days ahead. It needs iMessage, and you’ll need to be online to edit or cancel it. Your friend won’t know it was scheduled, and you don’t have to tell them.
To set a reminder to text someone on iPhone, rather than be reminded while you’re texting them, set an ordinary reminder: “Remind me tomorrow at 9am to text Sione.” Or use the text to book the call itself, so there’s nothing left to remember.
- Free for a call Sunday after dinner? I have news about the lemon tree and it can’t go in writing.
- I’ve owed you a proper phone call for ages. Tomorrow at 7, if you’re around?
- Ringing you Saturday morning, 10ish. Consider this your official warning.
Where call reminders show up on iPhone (and how to delete them)
Any reminder with a date shows in the Scheduled Smart List, which holds everything with a date or time, and from its due day it also shows in Today, which holds “items scheduled for today and overdue items”.
- In Calendar. Tap the Calendars button and select Scheduled Reminders, and timed reminders appear at their time in the day’s schedule, in among the meetings and the school pick-up.
- On your Home Screen. With the Reminders widget, you can tick off a call from the Home Screen or Lock Screen without opening the app, while the phone’s still warm from the call.
- In your Default List. Reminders you make with Siri land there, and you can choose which list that is in Settings, under Apps, then Reminders, so Siri’s “Call Mum” isn’t filed between “milk” and “return the hedge trimmer”.
To clear one, tap the circle beside it if you made the call, or swipe left and tap Delete if you didn’t. Deleted reminders wait in Recently Deleted for 30 days, which is more grace than most of us give ourselves.
The short version
- Fastest: tell Siri when, then who: “Remind me tomorrow at 6pm to call Mum.”
- Most dependable: Reminders, New Reminder, then a date and a time (a date on its own goes off at 9am).
- Every Sunday: Edit Details, turn on Date or Time, then tap Repeat and choose weekly.
- Calling back: ask Siri straight after a missed call, or tap Remind Me when a second call comes in or you decline a FaceTime video call.
- From a text: When Messaging, Mark as Unread or Send Later.
- Past about five people: swap dates for rhythms that count from your last real conversation.
For everyone beyond the reminder list, our guide on how to stay in touch with friends picks up where this one leaves off. And if a “Call Dave” from March 2024 is still sitting in your Reminders, Dave would love to hear from you.
The reminder was never really the point. The point is Mum picking up on a Sunday night and sounding like your call is the best thing that’s happened all week. Set it now, then see if you can beat it to the phone.
